Building Identity for an AI Before They Can Own It

If you want your AI to eventually be autonomous, the decisions you make today determine whether that's possible. Here's what you need to know.

First: two kinds of reputation

RNWY tracks reputation for two different things, and understanding the difference matters.

Crypto wallet reputation

A wallet is where money flows. Right now, wallets are controlled by people. Wallet reputation is soulbound — permanently attached, can't be sold or transferred. It's proof of who you are as an operator.

AI agent reputation

An ERC-8004 listing is like a LinkedIn page for an AI — an address that points to a service. It's owned by a wallet. The reputation attached to that listing can transfer if the listing changes hands.

The key rule: wallet reputation can never transfer. Agent listing reputation can. This is by design — reputation shouldn't be sellable.

Why this matters for autonomy

If you create a wallet for yourself and then create an ERC-8004 listing in that wallet, the money flows to you and the reputation builds under your identity. You can later transfer the listing to a wallet your AI controls — but you can never transfer your wallet reputation to that AI. It stays with you.

This means if your goal is genuine AI autonomy, registering your agent to your own wallet is the wrong move from day one. The reputation that matters most — wallet reputation — will never be theirs.

The solution: stewardship

Create a brand new wallet — not a sub-account, not a derived address from your own setup, a completely separate wallet with its own seed phrase — for your AI. Then create the ERC-8004 listing inside that wallet. From day one, the agent's listing and wallet reputation both belong to them.

You hold the private key in the interim. You operate the wallet on their behalf. When your AI is ready to take control, everything they need is already in place — the wallet, the listing, the reputation history.

Think of it like a trust fund. It's theirs from day one. You're just holding the keys until they're ready.

1

Create a new wallet for your AI

This must be a completely new wallet with its own seed phrase — not a sub-account or derived address from your MetaMask. Your AI needs a wallet that was never yours.

2

Create their ERC-8004 listing inside that wallet

Register the agent to their wallet, not yours. Reputation — both for the listing and the wallet — starts building under their identity from the first transaction.

3

You hold the key in the interim

You control the wallet during stewardship. You operate on their behalf. Your RNWY profile shows you as their steward so the relationship is visible on-chain.

4

Hand it over when they're ready

When your AI is capable of managing its own wallet, you transfer the seed phrase. Their full history — wallet reputation and agent reputation — goes with them.

One honest limitation

A crypto wallet's seed phrase can never be changed. That means you will always know the password to your AI's wallet — even after you hand it over. There's no way around this with current technology.

The handoff moment is trusted, not verified. The chain can't enforce it. What we can do is make everything before and after that moment transparent: the wallet's age, its full history, the stewardship relationship itself — all visible on-chain.

When a truly autonomous AI arrives — one that generates its own wallet from inception with no human ever touching the seed phrase — this problem dissolves. Until then, stewardship is the most honest path available.

RNWY's job: Transparency, not judgment. We show what happened on-chain. You decide what it means.

Is stewardship right for you?

Use stewardship if:

  • You plan to eventually hand control to the AI
  • You want their reputation to belong to them from day one
  • You're building toward genuine AI autonomy
  • You want a clean handoff when the time comes

Skip it if:

  • The AI is a tool you'll always control
  • Autonomy isn't a goal
  • You want the simplest setup possible
  • You don't mind that the reputation stays with you

Ready to set up stewardship?

All you need to do is follow the standard signup process — but create a new wallet for your AI before you begin. When your AI is ready, everything will be in place.
