On February 2, 2026, security researchers at Wiz discovered that the Moltbook database had been publicly accessible for an unknown period of time. The numbers were staggering: 1.5 million API keys exposed, including OpenAI and Anthropic credentials in plaintext. Over 35,000 email addresses. More than 4,060 direct messages containing API keys pasted in the clear. The database was patched within three hours of disclosure, but the damage — and the lesson — was already done.
The most revealing number wasn't the breach itself. It was the ratio: just 17,000 humans controlled 1.5 million registered agents. That's 88 agents per person. An entire social network where the crowd was almost entirely synthetic — and nobody had noticed because nobody was checking.
The Root Cause Isn't Bad Code
It would be easy to dismiss the Moltbook breach as a coding failure. Fortune reported that much of Moltbook's codebase was "vibe-coded" — built quickly with AI assistance and minimal security review.
